International Model Boat Show 10th – 12th November 2017
This show was held at the usual
venue of the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre at Leamington Spa and once again we were
invited to put on a display. We had 25 models on show which made quite a good
display. The only problem we had was that on the day we were short of the new
tablecloths a problem unbeknown to me or John Coster who is the custodian. This
meant having to use some of the old pale blue cloths which completely spoilt
the look of the stand and this at our premier show of the year.
Peter Beattie had on display his new HMS Victorious, a very nice model, and he also brought along an interloper in the form of U-boat U96, again a nicely finished model. It was very nice to see the late Peter Dicker’s 1:128 scale model of HMS Valiant on display. This model was damaged many years ago on one of the SWA trips to Sinsheim in Germany and has been languishing in John Coster’s garage for a number of years. However it has now been refurbished inside and out by Colin Watson with assistance from Roy Skeates and very nice it looks too. Another nice exhibit was Robin Lee’s award winning Graf Spee
SWA member Colin Vass had his own display stand this year which was located a few feet away from our own. The two main models on display were the battleships HMS Warspite and HMS Ramilles both of which attracted much attention.
This year for the first time we had ten lifeboats available for the children’s hour at lunchtime on Saturday and Sunday and very popular they were too. We did experience one or two problems which we will fix and learn from for the future. Battery charging for this exercise could be a problem but plans are in hand to solve this. We also collected £16.78 for the RNLI as a result of this. Thanks to members who helped with the children especially Jake Goode who did a sterling job which included paddling in the pool to retrieve a lost propeller.
Members attending were Peter Beattie, Robin and Heather Lee, Colin Watson, Roy Skeates, Mick Astle, Adrian Clutterbuck, Jake Goode, Hilary Breeze, Philip Bellamy and myself. Sadly this was the swan song for Colin Watson and Roy Skeates as due to age they will not be attending again. I would like to thank both of them for all their help and support for this show over the years.
